Giving up on dating I'm sick of trying. And frankly, I'm lonely. All my friends (male and female) are either married or otherwise coupled up, and while they say I'm welcome and they all enjoy my company, still I always feel like a fifth wheel. Besides, they have lives of their own and I don't want to wear out my welcome.

Attempting to date is pretty much pointless; all the women I meet have wildly unrealistic expectations, and as I am neither filthy rich, nor 6'5" nor do I look like a movie star, I usually don't meet their requirements.

So I'm now just looking for a friend. Someone to go out with now and then, enjoy each other's company, catch a movie, maybe snuggle a little just because it feels good to have some human contact. My cat is friendly and likes to cuddle, but it's not the same. No sex; I haven't had any in years, anyway, ever since I caught my last girlfriend cheating, so it's nothing new.

I'm half artist and half engineer; I like to talk about science, art, history, writing, film, philosophy, and human nature. I read a lot on many different subjects, and I like outdoors pursuits like diving, hiking and horseback riding. I also enjoy designing and building things, everything from furniture to electronics to machines. I'm fluent in English, decent in German, tolerable in French, and can struggle through Spanish and Portuguese. I've lived several places in the US, the Caribbean, and Europe, and have several degrees. I prefer tea to coffee, wine to beer, film to TV, and doing just about anything else to watching sports. Don't even get me started on rap music or reality shows.

I'd prefer to meet someone who's more or less in the same stage of life that I am: 30s-plus, single with a job, a car, a place to live, and no kids yet. Pluses for being extremely smart, an intellectual, a country person, libertarian, non-religious, a Mac user and an animal lover. Double pluses if you are creative, a filmmaker or writer, scuba dive, grew up on a farm or like to work with your hands. Triple plus for a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor that includes puns.

Again, I'm NOT looking for sex, or "FWB" or anything like that. Just a friend with whom to share time and interests. No one with husbands, boyfriends or children; I don't want to inflame any jealousies.

If it matters, I'm divorced (10+ yrs) with no kids, have a good job, a nice house, car and no bad habits (smoking, gambling, drugs, STDs, excessive drinking, etc.) I'm 5'10", with an average build and reasonable looks. I always wanted to have a family, but it just didn't happen.

And yes, I have pictures, I just don't want to put them up here for the whole world to see.

I should add that I wouldn't mind if this turned into something more, but I really am no longer even hoping for that. Once a man is past 40, that's pretty much a fantasy.
